CITY VILLA IN DÜSSELDORF
with luminaires by Artemide – www.artemide.com
A city villa with a storied past: Built in 1926 by Peter Josef Kleesattel, best known for his church buildings, this 1,000-square-metre estate served as the residence of the British ambassador in the postwar period before standing empty for years, left to decay. Designer Olaf Kitzig eventually took on the task of restoring this architectural gem, carefully renovating the listed building with his team and transforming it into a “residential symphony of furniture, art, and light”. In doing so, he completely reimagined the villa’s layout: today, the ground floor houses the showroom of his internationally active studio, while the first floor is dedicated to private living spaces, and the attic accommodates separately accessed workspaces. Each room is designed with its own distinctive colour, material, and furnishing concept, which come together in a rich and intricate choreography, creating a diverse yet harmonious overall composition. The interior design is further enhanced by a sophisticated lighting concept, tailored to each area and its specific function: from indirect lighting for the staircases and stucco ceilings, to wall-mounted spotlights that perfectly showcase the countless artworks, through to striking pendant or floor lamps alongside extravagant light sculptures – a wide variety of lighting moods are created that lend the rooms vibrancy, individuality and a special aura.
